THE ISLIP ART MUSEUM
Founded in the early 1970's by Elizabeth Vaughn, the Islip Art Museum was originally named the Islip Art Gallery. The gallery featured contemporary art created by Long Island artists, and was originally located in an old gatehouse by the entrance of Brookwood Hall. Unfortunately, the gatehouse later burned down and the gallery moved to the south wing of the Brookwood Hall mansion, where the museum is still located. In 1985, the gallery partnered with the Town of Islip to become the Islip Art Museum as it is today.
With its many events and always changing exhibits, the Islip Art Museum is a great place for people of all ages to come and enjoy the art the museum has to offer. The museum even offers virtual events and exhibits for those who are unable to visit the museum in person. They have a permanent collection, as well as collections that rotate periodically, including an exhibit that includes the art of young up and coming new artists. The museum also includes a beautiful outdoor sculpture garden located on its grounds. There are two large fishing piers to fish off of, great for catching crabs, or for those who would rather fish from dry land. There are also charter and open fishing boats available for rent for those who would rather fish further away from land.
For those who aren't big on fishing, there is still lots to do at the park. There are paddle boards, canoes, and kayaks that can be rented, as well as playgrounds, a nature center, and a restaurant. For those who like to camp, there are cabins, cottages, and camping sites available.
