The leading cause of all fatal traffic accidents was driver inattention, followed by unsafe speed. 26 tractor-trailer fatal crashes occurred in the state in 2011 resulting in 28 deaths with driver inattention being the main contributing factor. 47 motor vehicle drivers and 24 passengers were killed in these accidents who were not wearing seatbelts of any kind. Bergen County experienced 6,877 injury crashes in 2011 which was a slight decrease from 2010.
