Getting around is much easier in today's world. In the past you had taxis that you would call. Today, you can book a ride on your smartphone through ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. While both services are a convenient way to travel, accidents can and will occur, as with any mode of transportation. Knowing how to file a claim and get compensation if you are injured in an accident involving an Uber or Lyft is an important piece of information to know.
Knowing your rights and the process is valuable. We will explain further in the following blog post. However, we highly recommend that you speak with an experienced CT Uber accident lawyer about your case before making any decision.

Liability in Uber Accident Claims in CT
You have to provide evidence showing the driver was at fault if you were injured in an accident—whether you were a pedestrian or a passenger. This also holds true if the driver works with Lyft or Uber. Similar to any other motor vehicle accident claim, you will have to prove that the driver's negligence and lack of reasonable behavior while operating a vehicle caused the accident, which led to your injuries.
Distracted driving, speeding, driving under the influence, texting and driving, and/or disregarding traffic laws and signage are all common examples of driver irresponsibility.
Damages Available in a CT Uber Accident
You will have to determine what damages you are entitled to if you are able to prove fault against the Uber or Lyft driver. Damage you may be entitled to, includes:
- Medical costs
- Costs of ongoing treatments: physical therapy, rehab, etc.
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
In the event of a serious injury due to the accident, damages available may be much greater. With greater harm, a higher monetary award is typically paid out.
Insurance Coverage
Most car accident victims never anticipate the at-fault driver will not have adequate insurance. Unfortunately, there are situations where this happens. Identifying all available insurance in your case is important.
Rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft have attempted to claim that their insurance coverage does not cover its drivers. In some cases, the companies will argue that the driver was an "independent contractor" rather than an employee of Uber or Lyft. On the other hand, if you attempt to collect on the driver's personal auto insurance, the insurer may refuse to pay since the driver was using the vehicle for a taxi service. As a result, attempting to collect compensation in Uber/Lyft accidents can sometimes be difficult.
Insurance Coverage for Uber and Lyft
Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft are required by law in Connecticut, as well as in many other states, to maintain insurance coverage in order to safeguard drivers, passengers, and other parties in the event of an accident.
The insurance policy for Uber and Lyft usually has three main coverage periods:
Coverage Period 0
When the ridesharing app is closed or the driver is not logged in. You are only entitled to compensation under the driver's personal auto insurance policy in this case. Insurance coverage will be refused by Uber and Lyft.
Coverage Period 1
When the driver has not yet accepted a ride request but is still signed into the Uber app. Uber offers minimal liability coverage for property damage and bodily injury during this time. Uber normally offers $100,000 in coverage for each accident and $50,000 for each wounded person. Of course, you must still prove liable to collect damages.
Coverage Period 2
When the driver is on his way to pick up the passenger after accepting a ride request. Uber/Lyft's insurance policy offers $1 million in additional liability coverage.
Coverage Period 3
As the passenger is being driven to their destination, there is $1 million in coverage offered during this time.
