New Rochelle is in the southeastern New York region known as Westchester County. The city spreads out from New Rochelle Harbor and Long Island Sound, with its northern border defined by I-95 and its western border by the Bronx River Parkway. It also borders Pelham Manor and Scarsdale to the west and North Castle and Mount Vernon to the northeast.
Geography of New Roch
New Rochelle has an irregular shoreline along Long Island Sound, with 13 miles (21 kilometers) of public beaches that stretch from Glen Island Park in the north to Alling Memorial Park in Pelham Bay Park at the southern end of the city. The heavily traveled East Shore Expressway runs alongside the sound, providing access to other waterfront communities such as Larchmont, which sits on a peninsula. To the west, New Rochelle is separated from Mount Vernon by the Bronx River Parkway, which links to the Hutchinson River Parkway that runs through Pelham Bay Park. White Plains Road runs north-south through eastern New Rochelle to northern Scarsdale and Bronxville.
The city of New Rochelle includes a total area of 64% of which is water, along with an extensive shoreline including nearly 13 miles (21 kilometers) of public beaches fronting on Long Island Sound and two parks: Alling Memorial Park and Wingert's Lake Park. The mainland portion is made up of hardwood forest, scrub brush, and some wetlands; northern areas near Larchmont include low cliffs and rocky outcrops overlooking Long Island Sound. According to the United States Census Bureau, New Rochelle has a total area of 13 square miles, of which (20.00%) is water.
Climate
New Rochelle has a humid subtropical climate ("Cfa") bordering on a humid continental climate ("Dfa"), with cold (sometimes bitterly cold) winters and hot (sometimes extremely hot and humid) summers. It features mild to cool winters and warm summers along with plenty of precipitation all year round.
The city enjoys four distinct seasons: Autumn, from September through November; winter, from December through March; spring, from April through June; and summer, from July through August. The city receives 49 inches (1,200 mm) of rain per year – fairly evenly distributed throughout the year – with snowfall of 8 inches (20 cm) per winter. Demographics and population
As of the census of 2010, there were 79,110 people, 30,691 households, and 21,630 families residing in the city. The population density was 12,435 people per square mile (4,767/km²). There were 32,479 housing units at an average density of 5302 per square mile (8981/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.8% White Non-Hispanic white, 7.8% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.6% Asian Indian 1%, 3.3% other Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.8% of the population. The majority are Puerto Rican 5%, Dominican 3%, Haitian 2%, and other Hispanics 4%.
The African American population is mostly concentrated in the eastern section of the city, while the Hispanic population has grown substantially over the past twenty years, moving primarily into southern sections toward Scarsdale. The concentration of Asians throughout the city remains high, especially in southern sections near downtown. New Rochelle also has a notable European population, primarily Italian-Americans along with some Irish-Americans, Polish-Americans, and Greek-Americans; many have relocated from nearby New York City (NYC) suburbs for lower taxes and larger homes available at a lower cost than in NYC.
